A Summer stay at Munnar - 2009

Being a summer, the temperatures going above 35 degrees is usual. But,due to the poor rains this year,it is unusually hot in Pune. So i and my friends decided to go for a trip and relax in a cool atmospere. My friends staying in Chennai,a place one cannot even think of in summer,The place the immediately stroke our mind was Munnar.
We booked tickets, packed up and ready to travel. But finally two of my dropped due to unavoidable circumstances. But still we carried on our tour plan by joining one more person in the absentees place. Finally we are four in number, which is a good number i thought, because it suits well in many places like hotel, getting a 4 seater table is easier than a 5 seater.

I started from Pune by taking a flight and reached Bangalore in the evening ,then took a train to Coimbatore.Eventhough i went to Coimbatore ,few times,i never stayed in city.So i don’t know much about it.I just enquired and made sure, that the train i am travelling goes upto Coimbatore and halt as it is the last station.I had a good sleep and didn’t bother to get up in the morning in the right time. Even the train reached the station early,i was still sleeping. Thanks to the person, who came there to wake me up and say that its the last station ,please get up.By the time i woke up and my cellphone charge was almost dried up,then i realized i didn’t note my friends number who came by another train from Chennai. Then i immediately noted down their numbers, and my crappy phone was still searching for a network in the city, then i called my friends, who were already searching for me in Coimbatore junction.

We took a bus to pollachi and boarded in a lodge. We stayed there in Pollachi, for two days during which we travelled to many places like Aliyar,Vaalparai and Thirumoorthi falls. Then on the third of the trip we boarded the bus for Munnar ,from the Udumalai. From there the journey hours are 3hr 45 mins, fully through the western ghats of around 80 kms.We reached Munnar and immediately felt the weather was too good at that time.We enquired the localites and came to know that we are very lucky in one way the nature prepared to give us a pleasant stay in Munnar. They told us that it used to be hotter during that time, but there are early signs of monsoon, which caused the place to be cloudy and the temperature was very cool.

We found Munnar is a very good place for honeymoon.Still we can enjoy as a bachelor too.Munnar is a place which is more natural and less commercialised. It is a very small town,in which tourist attraction and tea estates are the main business. All you can get here is the greenery which was widely spread throughout the hills by tea plantations and eucalyptus trees.

All we did the first day was just walking across streets and feel the soothing atmosphere. We wanted nothing else here. The atmosphere itself speaks to our mind.Later in the day, temperature was very low and we stayed ourselves in room ,playing cards after long time with group of friends.Munnar is populated with mixed Tamil and Malayalam cultures. One who knows tamil easily roam as if it is a tamilnadu, due to high tamil population here.

Next day we started early and hired a autoricksaw which charged 600 bucks for showing the most part of Munnar in one whole day.Autorickshaws are cheaper and more comfortable to have a view of the widespread hillstation tea plantations while passing through.

Photpoint :
This is the first point in the hills which is famous for picturesque of tea plantations. We stopped by here and had few snaps.Look from here was really good.

Mattupetty Dam :
Another dam to watch out for .Good attractions here are the Speed boat trip which was really amusing.
The twists and turns the boat rider takes adds thrill to your trip.

EchoPoint:
Most Hillstations have a echo point. Here it is a small one, near the river.Another good point to pass time nicely.
Kundalay Lake:
It is a lake surrounded with mostly eucalyptus trees.Another good area to roam around and enjoy. There is a waterfalls called Attukad waterfalls but no water there.

RajaMalai:
This point is different direction, around 13km from the Munnar town.Ticket cost to enter this park is 35 per head. They are taking people in a mini bus to the top the hill. Here you can walk around and see the rare mountain goats living here.It is the highest peak here.

Overall Munnar is a place for relaxtion of body and mind. The usual urban schedule living in a closed space, puts you a narrow minded.Coming here and just seeing the widespread hills makes you mentally expanding your mind naturally along with the view throughout the hills.

I realized the famous tamil poet Bharathiyar words rightly so

‘Kakai kuruvi engal jaathi ,Neel kadalum Malayum engal kootam ‘

which means “Crow, sparrows are our race, lengthy mountains and oceans are our group”
